Yesterday is history , tomorrow is a mystery , today is a gift from God , which is why we call it the present. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// June 2023 * The music business is very competitive in all genres with the competition being more burtal than others. There is no shortage of talent in the world. Competition is tough and inspires one to work harder. As an independent artist bringing my horn front and center in contemporary smooth jazz I have completely fallen in love with the genre where every artist and their dog plays lead with trumpet or sax which by the way is very cool. There is some low end coolness just a click away. I suggest fans of the genre to do a dance and check out bone players past and present who are rawk'n & funk'n on the horn. It is always exciting and rewarding when finding and listening to new music. Big Ups to all bone players in the genre play'n that low end coolness power horn as the lead. Rawk On ! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// April 2023 * Two songs from my new EP are Finalists for the 2023 New Mexico Music Awards. A world class music studio (Mix Magazine 2017) right here in Albuquerque NM ! Now that's Burque Kool baby. Andy completed mastering the new EP this week. Topping off the week with an invite to his studio for a listen of my EP at his world class studio full of incredibly awesome audio gear. Sonic Luxury rules the flow on this EP. Wait For It ... //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// October 2022 * My new EP featuring an awesome line up of today's contemporary jazz musicians. Sharing their energy , talent and mojo on these original werks of music. Check these cats out on social media and get this awesome music on your play lists. Nils a guitar extraodinaire plays on all tracks and nailed it in the producer's chair. Johnny Britt plays trumpet & flugle horn on four of the tracks and Rhodes electric piano on one track. Leon Bisquera plays a bravissimo electric piano solo & B3 on one track. Darryl Williams plays bass on four tracks. Oliver Brown plays percussion on all tracks. Gordon Campbell plays drums on four tracks and Eric Valetine plays drums on one track. This project started in August of 2020. We all have experienced lots of challenges during the last two years. For me this EP represents what is possible by living in faith not by sight and the sacrament of reconciliation. Q1 2023 is the forecast for this EP to drop. Capturing this slice of life and the precious commodity of time that I would like to share with you. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// December 2021 * Excited today as the music continues to reveal itself for the new EP. Considering giving a sneak preview of some tracks once they start sounding decent.

March 28th 2020 * The coronavirus economic outlook that has effected the U.S. hinges on two things. How long does the U.S. have to stay in the coronavirus shutdown mode ? And how pervasive are the restrictions across the U.S. ? In the best case , recovery starts in May. In the worst case , a nationwide coronavirus shutdown extends through June. All perdictions about the coronavirus's economic impact come with a huge margin of error. Economists can't assume that the virus fades away with heat and humidity. Super effective viral meds could be a game changer. If enough people contract the virus and develop immunity , transmission could become harder.

Be the best you can be. Every day counts.

Let the assurance soak into into your mind and heart until you overflow with joy. Though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea , you need not fear !

The media relentlessly proclaim bad news : for breakfast , lunch , and dinner. A steady diet of their fare will sicken you. Instead of focusing on fickle , ever - changing news broadcasts tune in to the living word - The One who is always the same.

Let scripture saturate your mind and heart , and you will walk steadily along the path of life. Even though you don't know what will happen tomorrow , you can be absolutely sure of your ultimate destinatiion. I hold you by your right hand , and afterward I will take you into Glory.

May 11th 2020 * Taken the view that getting a PH.D. in economics is a major handicap when it comes to understanding the economy. They teach you a lot of nonsense ( the Phillips curve, "wealth effect," efficient markets, comparative advantage ) and then require you to create closed - formed equations with advanced calculus that bear no relationship to the real world. If you want to understand the economy, talk to your neighbors and get out of your bubble. The economy is nothing more than the sum total of all of the complex interactions of the people who make up the economy. Common sense, anecdotal information and direct observation are better than phony models every time. So what are everyday Americans actually saying ? According to this article

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/nearly-9-in-10-fear-economy-will-collapse-during-coronavirus-shutdowns

89% of Americans expect the Wuhan virus pandemic could cause a collapse of the U.S. economy. This view is shared by Republicans and Democrats alike. Ph.D. economists dislike anecdotal information because it's hard to quantify and does not fit into their neat and tidy (but wrong) equations. Here's a clue. There's something called the "self-fulfilling prophesy."

It means that enough people belive something, it becomes true (even if it was not true to begin with) because people behave according to the expectation and cause it to happen. The technical name for this is a recursive function ( also known as a "feedback loop"). Whatever you call it, it's happening now. Based on that view (and a lot of evidence), the forecast that the depression will get much worse from here despite the initial severity is high. The Ph.D. crowd will be the last to know.

May 13th 2020 * The band's gig this Saturday night at Marble Heights Tap Room is postponed raised in censure with NM state health restrictions due to Covid - 19. The band continues to move forward supporting local business , local musicans and our friends and family.

May 28th 2020 * In a world of unrelenting changes , I am the One who never changes, I am the Alpha and Omega ,the first and the last , the beginning and the end. Find in Me the stability for which you have yearned.

May 31st 2020 * Make sure that you test positive for faith. Keep distance from doubt , and isolate from fear.

In God We Trust

June 1st 2020 * I am involved in each moment of your life. I have carefully mapped out every inch of your journey through life this day , even though much of it may feel haphazard. Because the world is in a fallen condition , things always seem to be un raveling around the edges. Expect to find trouble in this day. At the same time , trust that my way is perfect , even in the midst of such messy imperfection. Stay conscious of Me as you go through this day , remembering that I never leave your side. Let the Holy Spirit guide you step by step , protecting you from unnecessary trails and equiping you to get through whatever must be endured. As you trudge through the sluge of this fallen world , keep your mind on heavenly places with Me. Thus the light of my presence shines on you , giving you Peace and Joy that circumstances cannot touch.

June 4th 2020 * The way to walk through demanding days is to grip my hand tightly and stay in close communication with Me. Let your thoughts and spoken words be richly flavored with trust and thankfulness. Regardless of the days problems , I can keep you in perfect Peace as you stay close to Me.

June 7th 2020 * " When the people fear the goverment there is tyranny. When the goverment fears the people there is liberty."

-Thomas Jefferson-

June 8th 2020 * On Sunday , The Wall Street Journal published an op-ed by Bob Woodson who argued that hostility towards the police has hurt black people. It's more class than it is race... and now race is being used to deflect attention away from the failures of people and those institutions , "he added. " The question is why are black kids failing in school systems run by their own people ? " When Eric Holder was U.S. Attorney in Washington , D.C. , a lot of young people were shot by the police , but they were black police shooting black kids and not one was prosecuted. But there was no public outcry because as long as illegality or evil wears a black face , then it escapes detection and that's what's wrong with looking life through the prism of race. "In the past 50 years , $22 trillion has been spent on proverty programs. Seventy percent goes not to the poor but to those who serve poor people , "he said. " So many of those people taking office use this money to create a class of people who are running the inner cities , and now after 50 years of liberal Democrats running the inner cities , where we have all of these inequities that we have , race is being used as a ruse , as a means of deflecting attention away from critical questions such as why are poor blacks failing in systems run by their own people ?

March 13th 2021 * In my musical journey I have yet to take an "official" music lesson , however I have experienced many musical lessons and life lessons working and performing as a musician. I continue to be blessed with this gift of music and this journey we call life. As for me I have forgotten about tradition a long time ago and when I play it is who I am. A great guitarist and composer once told me "you don't want your play'n to sound to schoolboy - ish " An't no schoolboy here ! This is a good read by Michael Lake an awesome altobone player and musician. Here is a portion of that read from his website titled - "IS JAZZ IN DANGER OF BECOMING A CARICATURE OF IT SELF ?"

Transcrption and modeling great improvisations is a wonderful tool for learning the jazz language. Using the tool as a means to feel in your head and hands the masters flow through the changes. Don't use that transcription as the substance of your solo and a lazy replacement for fresh spontaneous jazz composition. Are we overcome by the thrill of technical fluency beyond what we can organically project through our instrument ? And even if one is not chasing after fluency per se , there is that pervasive guilt of not playing up to "the standard" keeping up with the musical Joneses. Nothing wrong with striving for better / more fluent technical chops , but chops are the means to your musical expression , not the end. Perhaps the antidote , just for a moment , is to forget about how you "should " sound , and instead listen to how you DO sound and more importantly , how you want to sound. Where will you find that music within you ? Start by listening to the voice within your musical imagination. I know you've heard it but perhaps it is to often drowned out by the noise of obligatory imitation and blinded by the letters and the dots on the printed page.

- Michael Lake
